‘Brotox’ and Cosmetic Procedures, A Guy Thing?

“Brotox” and Cosmetic Procedures, a Guy Thing?

Male ‘brotox’ and cosmetic and aesthetic procedures a real game changer

brotox copyWhether it’s for an older-than-average dad who wants to look as good as he feels when coaching his son’s T-ball team, or a maturing manager striving to remain competitive in the ever-changing workplace, male brotox and cosmetic and aesthetic procedures can be a real game changer.

Cathy Dammann, a Medical Aesthetics Practitioner and owner of Spa Cielo Laser Center located in San Jose del Cabo, explains that many men undergo brotox and cosmetic procedures to maintain their youthful edge. “It is very common to have dads of elementary school kids in their 40s, 50s and 60s, and these guys are active, dynamic people who want to look as young as they feel and act,” Dammann says.

While some may consider ‘brotox’ cosmetic improvements to be a sign of vanity or superficiality, experts say that many Baby Boomers just want their looks to match how they feel inside, according to Dammann.

In this harsh employment landscape, many feel that the trouble isn’t with their resume, it’s with their appearance.  According to a recent report from ABC News Nightline (video), doctors are seeing clients who want to improve their looks to get an edge on the competition with ‘Brotox’ and other cosmetic procedures.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 400,000 U.S. men received ‘Brotox’ (a.k.a. Botox for men) injections in 2014.

The numbers also don’t lie. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 400,000 U.S. men received ‘Brotox’ (a.k.a. Botox for men) injections in 2014. That’s a tiny fraction of American males overall, but a 337 percent increase in any market over a decade is nothing to scowl at (pun intended).

What makes the explosive growth in ‘Brotox’ (which includes the three currently FDA approved injectables—Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, and Xeomin) fascinating, however, isn’t the market numbers. It’s the psychology and shame that’s still associated with it. I’m going to lay much of this blame at the boots of the Marlboro man and the advertising industry.

Minimally invasive procedures are on the rise, up 15% partly due to the troubled economy. The recession-driven job losses have put more baby boomers and workers in their 50s back into the job market, and they are competing with people in their 20s and 30s. Many are looking at improving their appearance as an investment they need to make.

Fortunately, a number of safe, effective and non-invasive anti-aging treatments are now available at competitive costs. 60 has become the new 40 and 80 the new 60. Baby boomers who regularly treat their skin will continue to do so and aren’t afraid to have cosmetic procedures even later in life according to many US dermatologists.

Advancements in cosmetic procedures have entered mainstream society, appealing to individuals from all walks of life, including men. Cosmetic surgery for men is a growing trend, with numbers frequently on the rise. While women still take the lead, accessible cosmetic procedure cost, together with the convenience of non-invasive and minimally invasive choices on the market, have caused men to heat up to the idea of  brotox and cosmetic procedures.

Industry statistics show that of the 13.1 million procedures performed last year, 11.6 million of them were non-surgical. Advancement and accessibility aren’t the sole reasons more men opt to take action. As a society we tend to place stress on appearance in dating situations and the workplace. An attractive appearance exudes confidence. Many men, significantly the baby boomer generation, might find the need to remain competitive in the workplace with a refreshed appearance. Divorced men realize cosmetic surgery is a perfect option for a confidence boost for returning to the dating arena. “The business world is not made up of old guys in smoky board rooms anymore, either,” Dammann adds.

“It’s young, dynamic tech people. For men, cosmetic procedures are not about beauty, but projecting the dynamics of youth and energy. There has been a shift in the last couple of years. Before my clients were 75% women and now 60% women and 40% men”, states Dammann.

The bad news is that no one can escape the visible and damaging effects of the sun, aging and gravity on their skin. Especially active men who tend to have a lot of outdoor activities here in the Baja, such as golf, tennis, fishing, and surfing. The good news is that we no longer have to accept the damage because of the effectiveness and safety of Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing and other anti-aging breakthroughs.

The anti-aging breakthrough of the decade, according WebMD and many other doctors, is a skin- resurfacing treatment known as CO2 fractional laser resurfacing. Combining the effectiveness of traditional carbon dioxide lasers — long thought to be the gold standard in wrinkle removal — with a new application technique, it delivers powerful results without the traditionally harsh side effects.

“Essentially, you are getting all the benefits of laser resurfacing, still the best way to remove wrinkles, but you’re getting it without the downtime and without the horrendous complication rate,” says David Goldberg, MD, director of Skin Laser and Surgery Specialists of New York and New Jersey and clinical professor of dermatology at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

“New diagnostic tools make it easy to customize a treatment program for our patients”, states Dammann. “We offer the VISIA computerized Complexion Analysis at no charge, it lets people know how their skin compares to others their same age.
